ISTANBUL - Turkish Daily News

The Turkish national team bowed out of the Amputee World Cup in the Mediterranean city of Antalya losing 2-1 to Uzbekistan in the semifinals yesterday.

Ismatov scored the opener for Uzbekistan in the 24th minute and Cüneyt leveled the game in the 34th, but Shokurov's goal in the 36th earned Uzbekistan a berth in today's final. Uzbekistan will play Russia in the final, which beat Brazil 4-0 in the other semifinal yesterday, while Turkey takes on Brazil to decide who finishes third.

Turkey coach, Fahir Genç, thanked those who have supported the team throughout the tournament. “We had a good start today, but the Uzbeks were better and we could not keep up with them,” he told reporters after the game.

“We have one more game to play and we want to finish the tournament at least with a bronze medal,” he said. Democrat Party leader, Mehmet Ağar, who was among the spectators, congratulated the team after the match.

“I want to thank all the players who are actually heroes. The important thing here is not to win but to participate. We, as the whole nation, will be proud of them whatever the result,” he said.
