The England Amputee Football Team

2002 World Championships in Sochi, Russia

Tournament Overview

England went into the tournament full of confidence and hope that they would improve on the 3rd place achieved a year earlier in Brazil.

In the opening group stages, after a disappointing defeat against Uzbekistan, a creditable draw against three time world champions Brazil and two victories against Ukraine and Moldova meant the team qualified for the semi-finals.

Here they faced Russia who were one of the pre-tournament favourites. Unfortunately Russia proved too strong on the day and progressed to the final at England's expense.

This left England once again in the playoff for 3rd/4th, this time they faced Uzbekistan. After a closely fought game England were to lose out in extra time by the 'Golden Goal' rule and thus finished the championships in 4th place.
